The Laurent Maur – Dominique Vantomme Quartet is an international and distinctive jazz ensemble. With its line-up, the group creates a unique sound that is both intimate and powerful.

Their repertoire consists mainly of original compositions, interspersed with a fresh take on a few standards. Lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and rhythmic grooves form the essence of their music. The quartet performs with an openness and energy that consistently captivates audiences, moving fluidly from subtle moments to fiery outbursts.

Since their first encounter in Paris 25 years ago, Laurent and Dominique have been a true musical tandem. Over the years, their dialogue has evolved into a close friendship built on intuition and trust. Over the past 10 years, they have been joined by Werner Lauscher and Domenico Verderame, giving the quartet its definitive form: a band that balances refined lyricism with infectious energy, always driven by the joy of making music together.

  

Laurent Maur (Chromatic and diatonic harmonica, DM48 MIDI harmonica)

Laurent Maur was born in Paris in 1970. He began his musical journey at the age of 18 as a self-taught musician, and by the time he turned 20, he was playing his harmonica in the corridors of the Parisian metro, earning a living for four years. At 24, he enrolled in a jazz program at C.I.M in Paris in 1994.

He then moved between Bordeaux and Paris, playing in various groups such as CBB47 (big band jazz), Jacob de la Fuente (Latin jazz octet), Pierrot et les mal lunés (rock java), and Jazz à Padam (swing musette). With the encouragement of Toots Thielemans and the collaboration of Do Harson (composer-arranger), he decided to create the album "Mano a Mano," surrounding himself with the trio of Francis Lockwood and a string quartet.

In 2001, he won the International Harmonica Competition in Trossingen, Germany. In 2004, he joined CMDL (Didier Lockwood's Music Center), where he met percussion master Orlando Poleo. They collaborated on the Afrovenezuelan Latin-jazz quintet, performing across Europe in various venues and festivals.

From 2011 to 2015, Laurent Maur lived in Asia (Beijing and Seoul), performing in jazz clubs and concert halls, developing his leadership and repertoire. In 2015, he founded the Youpi 4tet.

In 2016, he returned to Paris, engaging in collaborations with Parisian jazz musicians like Alain Jean-Marie, Gilles Naturel, and Samson Schmitt. In November 2016, he contributed to the soundtrack of the film Django with the Rosenberg trio.

In January 2017, he recorded his album "La Dernière Danse" live, releasing it in spring 2018 with Mario Canonge, Felipe Cabrera, and Pierre-Alain Tocanier. In August 2017, he secured the 1st place in the Jazz Category at the International Harmonica Competition in Torun, Poland.

In January 2018, he joined the project "Frères Migrants" with Felipe Cabrera, Isabelle Fruleux, and Patrick Chamoiseau, setting music to Chamoiseau's texts. The project was featured at the Avignon Festival and other notable venues.

In April 2018, the Youpi 4tet released the album "Noman's Land," and in May 2018, Laurent Maur recorded and filmed "Chef Larry" for a different playlist than his album.

From August to September 2018, he continued touring with the Youpi 4tet in China. In November 2018, he participated in Emilie Calmé's album "Flute Poesie."

In May 2019, the concert recording of "Chef Larry" was broadcast on MEZZO for four years. In August 2019, he contributed to Orlando Poleo's latest album and performed at Marciac with the Afrovenezuelan Latin-Jazz 5tet.

From September 2018 to March 2020, the Duologie project was highly successful, with over 150 concerts in France and Northern countries. In October 2019, Duologie was a finalist (2nd place) in the "YAM AWARDS", recognizing the best musical shows for young audiences worldwide.

In July and August 2020, Duologie performed 20 outdoor shows as part of the "Un été particulier, Festival ON/OFF in Paris" (City Hall of Paris). In August 2020, the Youpi 4tet played in Juan les Pins.

In September 2020, the second album of the Youpi 4tet, "MOZAIC," was released. In September 2021, Laurent Maur recorded "Vin Doux" in Athens with the Giourgos Kontrafouris Trio.

In January 2022, he recorded "Fantaisie Improbable pour Flutes et Harmonicas" in Duo with Emilie Calmé, and the album was released in May 2022, receiving positive reviews.

In September 2023, "Vin Doux" was released.

 

Dominique Vantomme (Piano)

Dominique Vantomme 是一位常駐比利時的鋼琴家、鍵盤手、作曲家與制作人。最初以布魯斯／爵士鋼琴演奏起步，過去十年間，他活躍于流行、搖滾與爵士等多個音樂領域，與眾多不同類型的音樂項目合作。

Dominique Vantomme is Belgium based pianist, keyboardist, composer and producer. Originally working as a blues/jazz pianist, he has spent the past 10 years playing with numerous acts in pop, rock and jazz. He has recorded and toured as a pianist, musical director and arranger for artists such as Axelle Red, Ana Popovic, Hindi Zahra, Vaya Con Dios, Viktor Lazlo, Louisiana Red, Theresa Malenfant, An Pierlé. Creating music and sound has always been a constant factor in his life, which has resulted in several records with his bands ROOT and Mahieu-Vantomme Quartet.

Vantomme divides his time between performing, recording and teaching jazz piano at the Conservatory in Kortrijk, Belgium.

 

Domenico Verderame (Drums)

Domenico Verderame 六歲開始學習打鼓。

Drummer of Italian origin, he is one of the most active musicians on the Belgian scene. At the age of four, he took lessons at the Academy of Music in Liège (Belgium) and simultaneously began working as a studio musician.

He started playing Rock & Pop Music.

At 17, he made his jazz debut with a master of the genre, saxophonist Jacques Pelzer.

When Laurent Maur (harmonica) and Dominique Vantomme (piano) first met in Paris twenty-five years ago, an instant and special connection was born. Two musicians with their own voices and universes, yet sharing the same openness to adventure and the same quest for a story that goes beyond notes on paper.

Over the years, they have shared stages across the world, written music together, and refined a language that only they fully speak. And yet, one thing remained absent: a recording that captured this long-standing collaboration. Until now.

At Finster Studio in Antwerp, under the expert ears of Joris Callewaert, they decided to take the leap. In just a single day, their first joint album was recorded – a deliberate choice to preserve the spontaneity and intensity of their playing. No endless polishing, no compromises: just the pure energy of the moment.

For this project, they embraced the power of the quartet and invited two musical soulmates: Werner Lauscher (double bass) and Domenico Verderame (drums). Together they form an ensemble where sound, rhythm, and imagination merge seamlessly.

The album offers a rich palette of original compositions – by Laurent, Dominique, and Domenico – ranging from lyrical melodies to rhythmic outbursts. On top of that, they chose two covers, which in their interpretation take on entirely new forms, respectful of their origins yet imbued with a fresh, personal signature.
